Highlights of Major Scientific Contributions Citing Relevant References: P.C.Trivedi
The major scientific contribution of Dr. P. C. Trivedi falls in the fields of Plant Pathology and Nematology. He has been working in this area for more than 36 years. His Ph.D. work (doctoral degree awarded in 1978) on the topic ‘Histopathology, histochemistry of root galls incited by Meloidogyne incognita and their control in Capsicum annuum L.’ was published in many reputed journals. His Ph.D. work has been cited in several research papers and books. He has worked with Prof. K. R. Barker, renowned Plant Nematologist, for one year at the Department of Plant Pathology, N. C. State University, Raleigh, U.S.A. where he took advanced courses in Plant Nematology and learnt many techniques. His work was published in international journals (Nematropica, U.S.A. 16: 213-236, 1986; Bot. Bull. Academia Sinica 30(2): 99-105, 1989).
Dr. Trivedi received and successfully completed 21 major research projects and is presently handling two major projects funded by U.G.C. and ICAR in the field of Plant Nematology and he has guided 38 research students for their Ph.D. degrees in the field of Plant Pathology and Nematology.
His major contribution includes studies on nematode diseases of various vegetables and crops in the State of Rajasthan and their management using biocontrol practices and reporting of resistant varieties after screening of germplasm. He has isolated local strain of Paecilomyces lilacinus from the field, which was found efficient in controlling root-knot nematode, Meloidogyne species. Multiplication of this nematophagous fungi was done on cheaper waste materials (International Nematol. Newslett, U.S.A. 4(4) 24-26, 1987) and applied in the fields successfully. Control of root-knot nematode using this fungus was achieved on Trigonella foenum-graecum (Nematologia Mediter, Italy 17:131-133, 1989); Brinjal (Annals of Biology 5: 103-107, 1989); Tomato (International Nematol. Newslett. U.S.A. 6(2): 27-29, 1989); Chilli (Indian Phytopath 45(1): 134-135; Proc. National Acad. Sci. (62(b): 275-283, 1992). Another fungus, Verticillium chlamydosporium isolated from local soil was found effective for the first time in managing major pest of wheat in Rajasthan, Heterodera avenae (Annals Pl. Protection Sci. 4(2): 111-114, 1996; J. Indian Bot. Soc. 99: 5-8, 1998) and Heterodera cajani (J. Indian Bot. Soc. 77:139-145, 1998; Indian Phytopath 53(4): 478-479, 2000). Recently, papers were published on nematicidal, bactericidal and fungicidal activities of manganese complex (Metal Based Drugs, England 9: 53-60, 2003) and on biologically potent heterocyclic sulphonamide imines (Heterocyclic Communications,England9: 95-98, 2003); microbial bioagents namely Trichoderma spp. , Bacillus and Pseudomonas spp (Indian Journal of Biotechnology 4:419-421, 2005); fungi and bacteria on Cajanus cajan ( Environ. Biol. & Conser. 2009,14:10-13).
Dr. Trivedi screened more than 100 locally available plant parts for their nematicidal properties, if any. He reported some of them to be useful in the management of nematode pests (Internat. Nematol. Newslett., U.S.A. 2: 7-9, 1985; Indian J. Nematol 16(2): 275-276, 1986; The Indian Zoologist 11: 79-81, 1987; J. Indian Bot. Soc. 66: 30-37, 1987; J. Phytol. Res. 4(2): 131-137, 1991; Current Nematology 3(1): 31-34, 1992; Proc. National Acad. of Sci., 64(3): 231-232, 1994; Proc. National Acad. Sci. 69: 343-345, 1999),; Current Nematology,2007,18: 47-52.; Annals of Plant Protection 2009 , 17(@) 437-439.
Another major research field of Dr. Trivedi includes location of resistance in varieties/cultivars of vegetable crops against root-knot nematode and cyst nematodes. He has reported some resistant varieties for the first time—Cyamopsis (International Nematol. Newslett, U.S.A. 3(1): 21-22, 1986); watermelon and musk melon (Indian J. Nematol.16(2): 272-273, 1986); Vigna radiata (The Indian Zoologist 11: 83-86, 1987); coriander (Indian J. Nematol. 18(2): 372-373, 1988); black gram (International Nematol. Newslett., U.S.A. 5(2): 18-19, 1988); soybean(Bot. Bull. Academia Sinica 30(2): 99-105, 1989); okra (Inter. Nematol. Newslett., U.S.A. 7(3): 13-15, 1990); Trigonella (Nemato. Medit.,Italy20: 59-60, 1992), barley (Indian Bot. Soc. 73: 279-282, 1994); sesamum (Indian J. Nematol. 29(2): 119-120, 1999; gram (Indian Phytopath. 53(1): 99, 2000), green gram ( Current Namatology, 18:35-38,2007), Cajanus cajan ( Asian J. Exp. Sci. 23(!): 141-148, 2009) etc. Many other control measures were also reported, specially the application of VAM fungi (J. Indian Bot. Soc. 70: 221-224, 1994); J. Indian Bot. Soc. 80: 9-13, 2001; National Academy of Science, 74: 143-152, 2004) and soil solarisation (J. Indian Bot. Soc. 70: 299-302, 1991) was found economical in the management of nematode pests of Rajasthan State. Many first reports of new host records of root-knot nematode (Indian J. Nematol. 16(2): 272-273) on plant.
Dr. Trivedi has transferred technology from the lab to the field for the management of nematode pests. He has developed display material for educating farmers on the problem of nematode on plants and their management. He has organised 15 National Conferences at Jaipur and has published 35 review articles on the subject of Nematology (Indian Rev. Life Sci. 1: 23-41, 1981; Nematropica, U.S.A. 16: 213-236, 1986; J. Phytol Res. 1-13, 1988; J. Plant Sci. Res. 4: 1-11, 1988; J. Indian Bot. Soc. 74a:165-171, 1995), edited six books in Plant Nematology (CBS Publishers, New Delhi, Scientific Publishers, Jodhpur), ten on Plant Pathology (Pointer Publishers, Jaipur) and others on General Botany.
He has written books on invitation by the Rajasthan Board of Secondary Education, Ajmer (classes XI, XII) ,UG level Books (B.Sc., I, II and III years) and M.Sc level books as per the U.G.C. syllabus . He has authored/edited 135 books in all.
He has provided practical solution for the management of plant parasitic nematodes (Meloidogyne¸Heterodera) using Nematophagous fungi, Bacteria and mycorrhiza, isolated from indigenous soil. These practical solutions have been utilized by industry for large scale production of Biopesticieds.
Scholary publication in SCI Journals of repute, many of which have good impact factor and these findings have been profusely cited by others. Also published reviews on the different aspects of Plant Nematology in Journals / Books of repute.
