The
Department of Urdu started functioning in 1958. In the beginning, Prof. Majnoon
Gorakhpur, who was a teacher of Urdu and English in St. Andrew's P.G. College,
Gorakhpur, took classes as a guest teacher. In October 1958, Dr. Mahmood IIahi
was appointed as a permanent lecturer and took responsibilities as the first and
founder Head of the Department. In 1959 Dr. Abdus Salam (Salam Sandilvi) was appointed
as a temporary lecturer.
The first batch of B. A. with Urdu as a subject
came out in 1960. In the same year M. A. Classes in Urdu started. The first batch
of M.A. (Urdu) came out in 1962.
The year 1964 is an important year in
the life of the Department of Urdu, because Dr. Mahmood Ilahi was appointed Reader
and Head. Dr. Salam Sandilvi was made permanent and Dr. Malikzada Manzoor Ahmad
was appointed as a temporary lecturer in the same vein. Dr. Nurul Ain Lari (Ahmad
Lari) was appointed in December, 1968 in December, 1972. Dr. Mahmood Ialhi (Head)
was appointed professor and it enhanced the status of this Department.
Dr. Salam Sandilvi was appointed as Reader in 1978 and he retired from service
on June 30, 1979. In February, 1980 Dr. Ahmad Lari was appointed as Reader and
Dr. Mohd. Akhtar Ali Siddiqui (Akhtar Bastvi) as lecturer. Dr. Afghanullah Khan
joined the Department as lecturer in November 1980. Prof. Mahmood Ilahi retired
on June 30, 1991 and R.Ahmad Lari took charge as Head of Department on July 1,
1991.
Professor Ahmad Lari retired on June 30, 1993 and Dr. Akhtar Bastvi
took charge as head of the Department on July, 1993. Under personal promotion
scheme Dr. Akhtar Bastvi and Dr. Afghanullah Khan were made Reader in May 1995
with effect from February, 1993 and November, 1993 respectively. During his tenure
of service, Dr. Akhtar Bastvi expired on June 10, 1998.
Dr. Mohamad Razi-ur-Raheman
took over the charge of Head of Department on 21st June 2007.
