In the recent past, the Department has
been a centre for academic activities. Seminars, Symposia, National Conference
and Refresher Courses have been organized under its aegis. The Department has
the credit of organizing thirteen Refresher courses in Sociology till date.
As per the X plan of the University Grant Commission, the undergraduate and postgraduate
courses have been upgraded to meet the challenges of the academic requirements
as have been developing these days. In spite of the constraints, the department
has managed to attain eminence by virtue of its excellence and commitment to the
cause of scholarship and research activities. The fact that the Department has
produced more than 120 Ph.D. degrees and equal number of dissertations
is a testimony to it. Research work in the department has always strived to tackle
the problems of local and national significance such as labour welfare in Indian
industries, women empowerment, health issues, child rights, social change in Indian
system etc.
Under the stewardship of Prof. Gopal Yadav, the Department
at present is striving hard to overcome the constraints and establish its glorious
credentials. For the first time in the history of this department Indian Sociological
Society has given the opportunity to organize the XXX All India Sociological Conference.
The department is also planning to start a couple of New Courses broadly on Dalits,
Gender sensitization and Marginalized sections. These New courses will open new
vistas and opportunities for professional attainment which are aimed to engage
and involve the students of sociology department in the process of social reconstruction
in the region. Efforts are also on to seek a special status for the department
from the University Grants Commission under its DSA programme. With these planning
in the mind, the Department of Sociology is confident of carving out a niche for
itself in the arena of academics.
