The department of philosophy having its
special place on the map of the Nation was established in 1958. In the beginning
it started functioning as a co-department. In January 1973 it became a full fledge
department from the administrative point of view and Dr. Smt Laxmi Saxena took
the charge of the Head of the Department. Due to high standard of teaching this
subject became very popular among the students during her tenure of the office.
The department became the centre of international philosophical activities due
to research work and standard books written on existentialism "Sambitivad"
and Vedant philosophy. The department is making effort to maintain the lofty standard.

The Department was a co-department from 1958-1973
during this period the responsibilities of the Head were carried on by different
learned teachers as officiating Heads.
Prof. Smt. Laximi Saxena and Prof.
S. Mishra raised the department to the loftiest height. Sri Dr. Sheomurti Tiwari,
Dr. J.S. Srivastava, Dr. Bhagwan Bax Singh, Dr. R.R. Pandey and Dr. Indra Bhushan
Pandey played remarkable role in making the department of national and international
repute.
