| Details : Workshop on "Exploration of Radio Universe - 2010" ERU - 2010, February 8-20, 2010
Sponsored by :: INC URSI - RFRS (Regional Facility for Radio Science), NPL, New Delhi
OBJECTIVE :
There is an acute shortage of trained human resource to make good use of
the world class facilities available within the country and not enough students
take up professional astronomy as their career. In order to obviate this situation
there is a need to hold workshops in various parts of the country on a regular
basis for providing a good introduction to various branches of observational
astronomy. As a step in this direction, the INC (Indian National Committee) of
URSI (Union Radio Science Internationale) Regional Facility for Radio
Science (RFRS) of NPL has sponsored this radio science workshop.
In this workshop emphasis will be on Radio Astronomy and Multi-
Frequency observations.
The topics include: Basic Astrophysics, Radio Astronomy, Radio Telescopes
and Receivers, software data analysis using AIPS software, LFR (Low
Frequency Radio Universe) and Space Science. The speakers include
scholars involved in world-wide Radio Astronomy and in Astrophysics teaching
and research. The young researchers will also be talking and working with
students to impart a high quality programme in radio astronomy. There will
also be Laboratory projects. About 2-3 popular lectures are also arranged.
The objective is to generate enough interest for Astrophysics, Physics
and Electronics.
DEVENDRA SHARMA CENTRE FOR ASTROPHYSICAL STUDIES
(DSCAS)
D.D.U. Gorakhpur University, Gorakhpur (UP) 273 009
Devendra Sharma Centre for Astrophysical Studies (DSCAS) is an
Institute established by D. D. U. Gorakhpur University. The University is
credited to have started post-graduate teaching and research in
Astrophysics since 1967 in its Department of Physics and has earned
the recognition of having maintained high reputation. It has hosted 8th
and 20th meetings of the Astronomical Society of India in 1982 and 2000.
At these occasions it has also organized seminars entitled High Energy
Astrophysics and Multi-Wavelength Astronomy.
*****
INTRODUCTION :
The country has many 2m class Optical telescopes; the Himalayan Chandra
Telescope and the older Vainu Bappu Telescope, both of the Indian Institute of
Astrophysics (IIA), Bangalore and the IUCAA-Girawali Observatory near Pune.
Besides, the 3.6 m Devasthal Optical telescope of Aryabhatta Research
Institute of Observational Sciences (ARIES), Nainital is under design. We
have also world-class Radio Telescopes; Giant Metre-Wave Radio Telescope
(GMRT), Pune, which is a modern synthesis radio array and a well used
international facility. The 10m mm wave telescope of the Raman Research
Institute (RRI), Bangalore is used as a training telescope. There are other
smaller facilities in optical and radio regime. The ASTROSAT facility will contain
a complex satellite based set of telescopes in UV and X-ray wavelength bands.
With the availability of Radio, Infra-red, X-ray and Space Telescopes a
new era of Multi-Wavelength Astronomy has emerged.
