With a view to prepare a cadre of professionally qualified managers, MBA programme was started by the Department of Commerce, DDU Gorakhpur University in 1995. This programme was converted into an independent department of Business Administration in the faculty of Commerce in 2001. A magnificent building along with its Computer Lab., Conference Hall and Library was inaugurated by the then honorable Chief Minister of Uttar Pradesh Sri Raj Nath Singh on Feb. 3, 2001.

To further enhance its quality and create awareness in trade and industry, the genesis of a “Vision” was conceived through our annual trade fair- an event to position our students as “Brands” in the “mind-space” and “heart-space” of corporate world. Since then four trade fairs have been organized. “Vision 2001” was the introduction of our Department to the city and corporate world. On this occasion, Trade Directory and Souvenir were published. Vision 2002 was aimed at building a relationship with industry. In this trade fair, a Health Care Directory was launched ‘Vision 2004’ was held in October 2003. “Waves 2005” was held in March 2005. This was aimed at creating a network with blooming corporate sector of India by launching a Web portal www.gumbatrades.com.

Our mission is to achieve excellence through knowledge, integrity and innovation. The students are nurtured and trained not only in conceptual, technical and managerial skills but also in values that accept change, diversity and plurality in thought and ideas that respect individuals. Our culture goes beyond the normal learning process - it is here that the students with help of faculty build hopes and nurture dreams and lay the foundation stone on which stands the monument of their careers. The Department imbibes virtues and ethics in its students without which it considers its education incomplete.

Since the establishment of the Department it has created “an atmosphere of learning culture” to prepare future managers with passion and desire.

The role of faculty is to lead rather than control, and coach, and preach to get better results. Even class room teaching has undergone sea change as now more emphasis is given to case studies to create right blend of body language and passion in the students when they defend their arguments.

In addition to class room teaching, the Department conducts a number of activities like presentation, quiz, debate, essay writing, event management and personality development programmes etc. for the all-round development of the students. After second semester, students are required to undergo training for six weeks in an industrial house of repute. This gives them an opportunity to have a feel of real life business situation.

Ever since its inception, the department has adopted drive for excellence and has the mission to position itself within the top ten universities of India by 2010. To achieve it, 4Es formula has been drafted. 4Es of Department are:

* Personal Energy to welcome and deal with the speed of change.
* The ability to create an atmosphere that energizes others.
* Edge to take difficult decisions.
* Ability to consistently Execute.

To sum up, the department is on the way to accomplish its “Vision” the dare dream seen by our founders. “We build great people who in turn build great products and services".
