Medical College
Permission to set up this medical college in
the name of Baba Raghav Das Known as Purvanchal Gandhi and a devoted servant of
the society was received in 1968. Its foundation stone was laid by Sri. Chandra
Bhan Gupta, the then Chief minister of U.P. on a piece of land spread over upto
147.6 Acre. In the beginning, main buildings, out door Departments, Indoor Departments,
Nehru Hospital, Hostel and residential blocks were built. In 1971, Gautam hostel
was built. The same year Principal and 6 lecturers and other incumbents were appointed.
Dr. P.L. Shukla was its first Principal for the first time in 1972, 50 medical
scholars including 8 girl scholar sought admission in the college. In 1977 Dr.
P.L. Shukla the then principal had prophesied "This medical college is one
of the best medical colleges and its pharmacology department has its place in
the world."
In 1977, the first M.M.B.S., batch, passed the exam. 9
students out of them sought admission for Post-Graduate education in other medical
college. In 1980 consent for 8 M.D. / M.S. in the medicine, surgery, pediatrics,
orthopedics, S.M.P., anatomy and pharmacology, has been received. In 1981, this
number increased to 36. The medical college started functioning from 1975, and
the attached Nehru Hospital from 1978. The college received recognition for M.B.B.S.
Degree in 1979.
Principal Dr. P.L. Shukla, Dr. S.K. Gupta, Dr. R.N. Srivastava
contributed greatly to the progress of the college and to give it a new course.
At the present Dr. R.B. Verma is working as principal and the director of the
college. The speed of the progress of the college showed at the time when there
was a decrease of more than half medical teachers. Out of them some were transferred
and some were retired and vacancies could not fill in. So tuitional work was affected
and patients had to face difficulties.
At present there are 26 departments
for medical education and for the treatment of the patients. These are Anatomy,
Physiology, bio-Chemistry, Pharmacology, S.P.M., Neurology, Cardiology, Surgery,
Neuro-Surgery, Ophthalmology, Orthopedics, E.N.T., Anesthesia, Pediatrics, Abscess
and Gynecology, Dental Surgery, T.B. and Chest, Skin and BD Radiohygonsis and
Radio Therapy.
This medical college working as medical institute of Purvanchal
does not serve only the patients of the Purvanchal but also of Nepal and Bihar.
The misfortune is that diseases in this region are greater than that of other
regions and a great number of people suffer. Since 1978, this region is badly
affected from the wrath of Japans Encephalitis every year. Specialized treatment
of these diseases is done here in this medical college. It is very great problem
for this region.
Besides teaching and treatment work, seminars, conferences,
symposiums, workshops are arranged here from time to time. In the Pediatrics department
special work is being done to encourage breast sucking. In the Skin and clandestine
diseases department ADE treatment is done. Blood bank facility is available here.
This college has a well equipped emergency department. Many senior teachers of
this institution have training in foreign countries. Cultivable programs, games
and sports are regularly organized here. Students taste and their talents reveal
that they are adept in extra activities.
Undoubtedly Baba Raghav Das Medical
College can be an Ideal Medical Institution after its name work, provided lack
of teachers in removed and for immediate development. There should be scarcity
of money. By giving it the form of a society, the state Government is trying to
solve all the problems of the institute, so that this medical college would be
known as an ideal Medical College not only in the state but all over the country.
