Delegacy
in Gorakhpur University
University Delegacy was established
in 1958 to create high class literary and culture atmosphere for the students
along with the academic work. Dr. A.B. Mishra the Head of Commerce department
was its first president. In the year of its establishment four zonal centers-
Eastern, Northern, Western and southern were created. Separate female zone was
also setup. From 1960-1968 the delegacy developed under president Sri. S.D. Singh.
Dr. R.N. Verma reader English department become its president in 1969 and he worked
for it upto 1971. During his tenure of office, delegacy lodge was established
to provide residential facilities to the university students in addition to the
hostel. Sri. S.D. Singh again took charge of the delegacy president from 1972
to 1975.
In 1976 Dr. Jagdish Singh, reader, Department of Geography started
working as its vice-president under new rules. Due to some difficulties delegacy
lodge was to be stopped. In 1979, Dr. U.P. Singh reader of maths department was
nominated as the vice-president. In accordance with the 1973 rules, delegacy was
duly organized in 1979 and the following official's were appointed.

U.P. Singh (vice-president), Dr. B.K. Srivastava (General Secretory), Dr. Parbha
Shanker Pandey (Treasures), Dr. B.B. Singh, Dr. Hiral Lal, Dr. B.N. Sharma, Dr.
Uma Shanker Pandey, Dr. N.A. Lari, Dr. Jai Prakash Chaturvedi, Dr. A.K. Saxena,
Smt. Vinod Solanki conducted the delegacy centers. U.G.C. study centre running
since 1976, was shifted to a part of the delegacy office. In March 1983, Dr. P.S.
Pandey reader department of Sociology, took the charge of the vice-president of
the delegacy and re-organised all the centers of the delegacy.
At present
Prof. Dr. Sadanad Prasad Gupta of Hindi Department is its Vice-President. He took
its charge on October 16, 1999. During there four years, there has been a great
progress in the activities of the delegacy. Many competitions were organized for
intellectual-constructive growth of the students. Students of the university took
active part in the competitions concerning to essay writing, debate, story telling,
poem, general studies, Arts craft, music, table tennis, badminton, carom and chess
etc.
The resolution of making a Badminton hall has been accepted by the
University Vikas Samiti. Its work has also started. When it is complete the students
will get opportunities enough to refine their talents. Delegacy is continuous
running centre. It need spread in various zones of the city. Future scheme to
establish some more centres in some zone of the city is under consideration.
