The foundation stone of the building
of department of Home Science was laid down by Mrs. Indira Gandhi, the then Prime
Minister of India in the year 1983. The State Govt. promptly came out with the
financial assistance and provided a grant of Rs. 48,95,0000.00 for the construction
of the building. The building took its shape and started functioning as a full
fledged department from the session 1993-94 in the name of Indira Gandhi Institute
of Home Science approved by Executive Council in its meeting on 23.12.84.
But after one batch passed out the department was closed until it was brought
back to life on 5th September, 2000.
And that was the day from when the
department is in process of establishing itself. The department is running three
year degree course at B.Sc. Level and the courses comprises of all five avenues
of home science, Textile, Life span development, Resource ragi, nutrition and
extension.
Nutrition is taught with added information about food group.
Therapeutics, Dirties and food product development. The meal planning is informative
and inspires every student to practice health food in day to day life and spread
the message. Textile technology has opened its beings into fashion designing,
apparel manufacturing, dye extraction etc. Management on the other hand teaches
about interiors and work simplification keeping into account the drudgery reducing
technologies in farm and house activities. The knowledge about consumers and its
dimensions is also imparted through the course. Life span development from infancy
to old age. The course specializes or theories dealing with growth and development.
All this is spread through intension, media where extension education become an
indispensable part of the whole human technology family. This helps to plan, create,
direct the message in more organized and impressive manner.
The department
recently celebrated its second Home Science Festival from 29th Jan. 04 to 31st
Jan. 04. The Vice Chancellor Prof. R. R. Pandey was the Chief Guest. The inauguration
of foods and Nutrition lab was done by the honorable Vice Chancellor on the occasion.
The festival left a mark with its various stalls of Adulteration, Drititics, income
generation, health, food, importance of toys in a childs growth through
Amazing Worlds stall etc. The events took place in the form of Rangoli,
Embroidery, flower arrangement, snack and Mehandi. The exhibition hall SRIJAN-04
had a great impact on the visitors which reflected various types of curtains,
swags, lamp shades, embroideries, models, soft toys etc. The informative session
was well organized when Sh. Ghanshyam Shukla Jis oration on consumer and
its problems turned out to be great benefit. It rather got transformed into a
talk session. The festival ended with enthusiasm along with prize distribution
ceremony.

Today the things have literally
changed in our Department of Home Science. Today we have the best facilities available
for academic as well as overall developments of students. We have one of the most
well-equipped labs which are highly mechanized to achieve maximum accuracy.
Today we have almost all the books and research journals relevant for reference
of students in our well equipped library.
We have come a long way from
initial state when we had 20 students in all now we have 250 of them and it is
all due to sheer determination, dedication and hard work of our staff and university
staff then and now.
