History department was established in
1958. Prof. Hira Lal Singh was its first Head. Teaching at graduate and post graduate
level was started since its beginning. In the session 1958-59, there were 52 students
in Post graduate class. At present 228 students at P.G. level and 1650 at graduate
level are on roll. Registered number of research scholars at present is 13. In
this session 18 research scholars were awarded Ph.D. Degree.
The history
department has incorporated in its post graduate syllabus the following optional
subjects under special paper. History of U.S.A., History of western Asia, Nepal
& Europe. At graduate level besides Indian History, History of the world and
European History are the parts of its course.
In 1978 Bhartiya Itihas Lekhan,
Social-Economic History and History of Indian freedom movement were incorporated
in post graduate course.
Research work on different aspects and stages
of medieval and modern Indian history has usually been carried on. Later on the
department emphasized on social-economic history and administrative history and
the history of freedom movement in U.P. consequently. Many untouched aspects of
concerning the role of U.P. in freedom movement, came in light. Of course the
scope of history is as much diverse and pervasive as human nature and society.
Hence the peculiarity is also seen in the research work of the department. Here
untraditional sources like novel painting and cinema are used in writing history.
The department has up till now awarded Ph.D. to 108 research scholars.
The
reputed historians Prof. Hira Lal Singh, Prof. Hari Shankar Srivastava and Prof.
K.P. Mishra took the charge of headship of the department. At present Prof. Ashok
Srivastava is the Head of the Department.
The Department has two posts
of professors, four posts of readers and four posts of the lecturers. In addition
to Prof. A.K. Mittal, Prof. A.K. Srivastava, Prof. S.N.R. Rizvi, Dr. Poonam Pant
(Reader), Dr. Himanshu Chaturvedi, Senior lecturer, Dr. Nidhi Chaturvedi, Dr.
Mukund Saran Tripathi, Dr. Chandra Bhushan Gupta and Sri Hirdaya Narain (all lecturers)
are the members of the staff.
History for civil services exam has always
been a popular subject. Generally every year our students succeed in it. Sri Ram
Sagar Pati Tripathi and Sanjeev Kumar passed PCS examination this year. In the
convocation year Km. Alka Singh student of this department qualified herself for
UGC N.E.T.
