Department of Education was originally
formed as L.T. College, under the patron ship of University foundation society
in 1953. After the establishment of the Gorakhpur University in 1956 under U.P.
State University ordinance and before the charge of first Vice-Chancellor of the
University being taken over by Sri. B.N. Jha on April 11, 1957, all the properties
liabilities and staff of the above quoted L.T. College were handed over to the
University on February 1957, by the University Foundation society and thus the
education department in the university was set up for the first time. In accordance
with U.P. Govt. decision the education department was changed into single department
Faculty of Education in January 1979. In 2003 The Adult Continuative and Extension
Department of education of the university became an organ of this faculty. Thus
at present there are two departments under this faculty - Education Department
& Adult, Continuation and Extension of education departments.
Pandit
Madan Mohan Malviya Study Centre under U.G.C scheme of informal education is functioning
here under this faculty. The great and effective role of directing it is played
by Mrs. Prof. Pratibha Khanna, the present Dean and Head of the faculty. This
study center is giving opportunities to students and the society to be benefited
by its important activities like organizing seminars and conferences, and debates
a from time to time at local and, national level and by publishing books.
It was the splendid mission of Prof. S.P. Chaube, the educationist, to evaluate
the faculty in various ways and this work of accelerating it was continued by
Prof. Sarju Prasad Chaube, Dr. Smt. Vimla Mehta, Prof. Vidya Sagar Misra, Prof.
Ravindra Kumar Joshi, Prof. Vand Kishore Lal, Prof. Smt. Snehalata Shahi, Prof.
Ram Deo Singh the Deans of the faculty. At present Mrs. Prof. Pratibha Khanna
is pioneering the faculty to upgrade it.
In the tradition of learned scholars
Prof. M. Verma, Prof. S.P. Chaube, Dr. Smt. Bimla Mehta, Prof. Vidya Sagar Misra,
Prof. Ravindra Kumar Joshi, Prof. Nand Kishore Lal, Prof. Snehlata Shahi, Prof.
Ram Deo Singh, played very significant role in giving the faculty the modern shape.
At present tuitional work in BEd & M.A. and Med classes are going on in education
Department. Along with these future teachers are being prepared in the various
fields of education - languages teaching, physics teaching, botany teaching, social
science teaching, in 18 subjects. Tuitional work under various courses in primary
education, Population & Environment education, educational measurement, evaluation,
statistics, and computer aided education, teaching of values, comparative education,
teacher's education, and economics of education, special education, educational
technology, educational and professional guidance and consultation. The evolution
of syllabus, and management of education, planning and financing etc., Tuitional
work in the field of specialization, is going on. Investigation work is going
on in philosophy of education, educational technology, educational guidance consultation,
educational measurement, educational management, History of education, economics
of education, educational planning and financing, educational sociology, psychology
of consciousness, and professional guidance etc special fields on.
At present
25 research scholars for Ph.D. Degrees are working under the supervision of different
teachers of the department. 16 students succeeded in the examination for junior
research fellowship & N.E.T., convened by U.G.C. during last few years. Seminar
for M.Ed. syllabus is organized every Saturday.
All the teachers of the
department are getting their research work in various fields, published. They
are presenting the essays and research papers in various national, international
seminars. During present session the teachers of the department participated in
refresher course conferences according to necessity. In September 2003, the third
refresher course on the topic "Adhyanpan Shiksha ke Ubharte Kshitiz"
was organized under the guidance of Dr. Lalji Tripathi, reader of the department.
Pandit Madan Mohan Malviya study centre set up in the department under U.G.C scheme
of informal education is arranging various academic activities. The departmental
library and reading room, is useful for the teachers, research scholars and the
student of the department. The department is actively organizing various syllabuses
- concurrent activities.
Dr. N.P. Bhokta (Reader) and Dr. S.N.Tripathi
(Professor) of the department are playing the role of coordinator in B.Ed. course
at this centre respectively conducted by I.G.N.O.U., Allahabad in distance mode
and all the teachers of the department are lending the needed cooperation for
the effectiveness of the course. The teachers of the department are performing
other general duties of the university viz. superintendent of the hostel, chief
of employment and consultation centre, student welfare, proctor and games etc.
Futur
Plan
In consequence of the provincial government policy this
department/faculty is helping its student in acquiring job through Vishisht B.T.C.
Hence demand of the syllabus of this department/faculty is continuously increasing;
department/faculty future plan is the construction of the lab for educational
psychology and computer. Besides under value aided courses prescribed by U.G.C.,
diploma in fashion and textile designing and part time courses of diploma in computer
education is conducted here by The Adult Continuative and Extension Department
of education of this faculty, for the student of this university. Moreover physical
education is also a future plan.
