From the beginning of tuitional work
in Gorakhpur University, under the commerce faculty tuitional work at M.Com level
was started in 1957. In the next session the teaching of commerce at Graduate
level & Economics at graduate and P.G. level, the faculty became a bi-departmental
faculty. Dr. Awadh Bihari Mishra the first head of the department together with
Sarvshi P.K. Dwivedi P.N. Singh laid its foundation stone due to the merger of
M.P. Degree College in the University. The number of teachers became 15. The first
session was run in pant bhawan. But when the university acquired the M.P.College
building, the department shifted to the campus of Maha Rana Pratap College. New
inspiring and encouraging environment for research and teaching was created after
Prof. R.C. Agarwal took the charge of Head of the Department in 1962 Sarvshi P.K.
Dwivedi, P.N. Singh and Mithileshwar Singh migrated to America for higher studies
and afterwards started teaching in the reputed university like Harvard and California.
Prof. R.K.Pandey as a learned and reputed teacher created a better environment
in the department and later on he adorned the chair of the Director of Indian
Institute of Foreign Trade. In 1965-66, Dr. Bholedra Singh the senior teacher
of the department was appointed as reader in Mysore University. Afterwards he
became Prof. and Head of the commerce department in Digmgarh University and then
again he returned to this university as its registrar. Later on he became the
Vice Chancellor of Purvanchal University Jaunpur. At present he is an honorable
member of the executive body of Gorakhpur University and is making a significant
contribution to its development.
Course in Business management was started
in 1965. Consequently the foundation of job oriented education was laid. All India
commerce conference was arranged in 1967, in which Prof. R.L. Agrawal was elected
the president of All India Commerce Association. After Prof. Agarwal's retirement,
Prof. A.P.Baijal took the responsibility of Headship. There has been unexpected
enhancement of students and research scholars under his proficient leadership
and direction, and number of teachers and 17 of lecturers. In January 1995, Prof.
Agarwal became the Head of the Department. On account of his special efforts long
proposed MBA course was started and the talented scholars of this region got opportunity
for job oriented education.
After Dr. Agrawal, Prof. Chaturvedi honourd
the headship and after his superannuation on January 2, 2001 Prof. I.A. Ansari
took the charge of the head. Since then he has been functioning as the Head of
the Department. Under his skillful leadership many research papers by the teachers
of the department were presented at national and international conferences, seminars
and symposiums and work on three research project is going on.
The departmental
effort of the last year was materialized on January 9, 2001 and new department
named Business Administration was established to make the MBA course recognized
by All India Technical Education Board, more meaningful and dynamic. Prof. R.S.
Singh the senior lecturer of the department was nominated as its Head.
During the last year 75 research scholars have got Ph.D. Degree under the guidance
of the teachers of the department and 35 scholars are doing research work.
Services of the teachers of the department as subject expert and advisor, have
been received by many national and state government offices and autonomous institutions,
bank and insurance companies. Prof. A.P. Baijal the ex-head of the department
lent his valuable services to Gorakhpur Regional Gramin Bank for several years.
Prof. S.N. Chaturvedi as senior lecturer has also lent his service to as a nominated
member of the advisory board of important institution like Life Insurance Corporation.
Besides the teachers of the department have always taken active part in the teaching
programmes of academic staff college Gorakhpur, Indira Gandhi National Open University
(IGNOU) centre at Gorakhpur University and UP Rajarshi Tondon Open University.
Prof. Dr. F.B. Singh the ex-senior teacher of the department has earned the fame
and glory of being the first convener of IGNOU study centre. During the last years
B.Com vocational syllabus financed by U.G.C. and C.A. foundation course planned
by Charted Accountants of India, was conducted by the teachers of the department.
Till now 6 refresher courses have been arranged by the department. Dr. Ajai Kumar
Gupta a teacher of the department has been selected for special study at Indian
Management Institute Ahemdabad. Many teachers presented their research papers
in national seminars.
