The Arts faculty of the Gorakhpur University,
established in 1956 under the UP State Universities Ordinance, has the glory of
bearing the name "The First Faculty". Classes in English, Education,
Psychology, Sanskrit, Ancient History, Culture and Archaeology, were started in
its first session.
This Faculty rapidly but gradually on the path of development
since its establishment for a period spread over a spirit span of 18 years. At
present there are thirteen departments in this faculty, the greatest number of
students of the university belong to this faculty. Separate arrangement has been
made for the girls and boys. Classes for girls are running in the 'Deeksha Bhawan'
and for boys in Arts Faculty.
Since its establishment, it has been making
rapid progress under the guidance and leadership of worthy and far sighted Deans.
Besides academic expansion, improvement in teaching and learning, in giving value-based
education, in creating meaningful and suitable educational environment and for
student's intellectual and cultural development, continuous efforts have been
made. To provide the students with basic faculties and to acquaint the teachers
with the latest teaching technology and learning process, opportunities have been
given through seminars and refresher courses organized by the academic staff college
and through conferences, seminars and symposiums organized by different departments
of this faculty.
The Arts faculty is determined to carry on the following
resolution to maintain its glorious past and to turn its new circumstances and
challenges in its favour.
To arrange at least one lecture of high standard
every month to attain high class academic environment. These lectures will be
delivered by the learned teachers of the various departments of this faculty and
also by the teachers from other than this university, so that the teachers and
the taught and others interested in it may take part through debates and discussion
may know the present position and future inclination of different subjects.
At present there is scarcity of high standard research journals, so the new researchers
and teachers feel difficulty in getting their paper published. The faculty has
a plan to publish research journals on inter-related subjects to overcome this
difficulty and it will be edited by the Heads of the different departments of
the faculty. The above quoted research papers will be published in the journal
so that its qualitative standard is maintained.
National conferences will
be held to exchange the radical thoughts of the teachers and taught and also to
make them clear in their conception on the contemporary subjects. Through these
inter-subject seminars the teachers and the students will get the latest knowledge
about the subjects other than their own. It will thus help to increase the intellectual
standard of the teachers on one hand and on the other they will prove their efficiency
in presenting their thoughts effectively and through these conferences and seminars
interest in other subject will be created in the students too and a special academic
environment can be created.
At the faculty level conferences and seminars
on regional, national and international events and on problems of the students
and the teachers, will be held. Especially the students will express themselves
in these seminars and conferences. Through these they will acquire knowledge about
the concerned subjects. They will inculcate in them the ability of expressing
themselves in right way and they will succeed in presenting their views in the
competitive examinations and also in the interviews. This will help them to form
a positive attitude and constructive impulse about the society.
Cultural
programs at intervals will be arranged to grow in the student's awareness of the
Indian beliefs, sacrament, and national glory and of local arts and also to create
an atmosphere so that the petals of cultural ability inherent in students may
expand, and by taking part in it, they will be acquainted with their cultural
heritage. They will be encouraged for "Shramdan ", to keep the campus
clean and to have co-operative spirit in the work of preservation and restitution
of its greatness.
The faculty is sensitive about the present social and
economic challenges. Taking it in view, it will be its effort to provide short
term job and trade oriented courses along with traditional ones.
