The
Department of Economics under Commerce Faculty, was started in 1958. Prof. R.P.
Bhadur was its first Head. Prof. Bhadur was very popular among University teachers
on account of his dynamic and magnetic personality. He was the first Pro vice-Chancellor
of this University. In the beginning, Prof. Vinod Dubey, Prof. T.S. Papola and
Prof. S.N. Mishra, the well reputed teachers of the department steered and glorified
the department. Prof. Vinod Dubey joined the National Council of Applied Economics
Research, New Delhi and then from there he was appointed in the World Bank as
an Economist. After a short period of service in this department Prof. T.S. Papola
went to Mumbai University and afterwards he became the director of Giri Research
Institute, Lucknow and worked in the planning Commission of India as an Advisor.
Prof. S.N. Mishra too, after sometime, went away to Institute of Economics Growth,
New Delhi from where he retired as the Director of the Institute. After serving
for few years here in this department Sri. J.N. Pandey, worked in Economic Commission
for East in Bangkok as an Economist for a year afterwards he re-joined this department
worked till his superannuation, Sri. Pandey was a reputed teacher as well as an
expert Homeopath and by giving free treatment to the people ha has an indelible
impression on the public. Dr. Hari Pd. Shahi had been the principal of Maharana
Pratap Degree College before its merge with the University was now appointed Associate
Professor and the first Proctor of the University. Later on he was elected as
a member of the U.P. Legislative Assembly. After retirement of Prof. R.P. Bhadur.
Prof. B.K. Singh became the Head of the Department in July 1976. Prof. Singh,
the foremost learned scholar of public finance has earned fame as a skillful teacher
and serious thinker. Remarkable progress in the research work has been made under
his wise leadership. After his retirement Prof. S.S. Mishra became the Head of
the Department. He too left his impression as a serious research fellow, and a
faithful teacher like his predecessors. He is a very important person in 'Matrix
Economics', 'Economics of Currency'. After his retirement Prof. S.R. Gupta headed
the department, but his Check death caused an irreparable loss so the department.
Prof. Gupta was a man of meek nature and of many academic achievements. After
his death, Prof. A.K. Srivastava has been faithfully performing the responsibilities
of the Head of the Department.
Prof. Srivastava has done remarkable research
work in public finance. This research work taxes on wealth and its transfer in
India has been rewarded by I.C.S.S.R., New Delhi. Under U.G.C. scheme, Prof. Srivastava
has done research work in Bombay University as a visiting fellow. It was the first
event in the history of D.D.U. Gorakhpur University that Prof. Srivastava and
Prof. S.N. Chaturvedi of commerce department had submitted a memorandum to the
11th Finance Commission. A report on a note on Fiscal Imbalance in U.P. Its dimension
and remedies has presented to U.P. government by Prof. Srivastava and Prof. S.N.
Chaturvedi, and it was highly praised.
In the chain of lustrous teachers
of Economics Department names of Dr. Janardan Shukla and Prof. Sudama Singh must
be linked. Dr. Shukla has been a jovial and ardent disciplinarian. Work done by
him as the chief proctor, is unique. Dr. Sudama Singh is well known as an expert
teacher and a solemn researcher. His books on international trade, public finance
and Indian economy are used as reference books.
To enhance the efficiency
of the researcher of the department, he arranged U.G.C. workshop Quantitative
Analysis in Economics I.C.S.S.R., New Delhi sponsored project Pattern
of Employment Income and Expenditure of Marginal and Landless Labour : A Case
Study of Gorakhpur District Eastern U.P. was successfully managed under
the direction of Prof. B.K. Singh. Similarly I.C.S.S.R., New Delhi sponsored project
Demand for Consumer Durable Goods and Its Financing in Gorakhpur District
(U.P.) was successfully carried on by Prof. Sudama Singh and also U.G.C.
sponsored project Dynamics of Ruler Labour Migration in the Eastern Region
Gorakhpur District was managed by Dr. Sudama Singh.
With the affability
of the academic staff college, of D.D.U. Gorakhpur University, the department
of economics successfully arranged refresher courses in 1993, 1999, 2001 and 2003.
Research work of high standard has been emphasized since the establishment of
the department of economics. The scope of research is given below. Mandric Arthshashtra,
Public Finance, International Economics, Industrial Economics, Economic Development
Jansankhya and Agriculture. Since 1990 till now 20 scholars have got Ph.D. Degree.
At present research scholars are working under all the teachers.
Besides
tuitional work, essay competition, elocution contest and other cultural activities
are arranged in the department for all round personality development of the students.
Consequently students of the department have been successfully competiting in
all India examination. This year too like the past the department arranged elocution
contest, speech competition, essay competition and pictorial expression of economic
tendencies. From time to time the department arranged for the lectures of economists.
In the fourth refresher course in 2003, lectures of learned scholars were arranged
for full development of the scholar's subject specialists from Kashi Vishwavidhyala,
Allahabad University, Lucknow University, J.L.N. University Delhi, Indian Public
Administration Institute Delhi, V.V.Giri Economic Development Institute Lucknow
delivered their lectures in the fourth refresher course. Establishment of centre
for regional economics studies is the main future plan of the department of economics
outline of organizing a national seminar on Budget and its effect. Project making
work is also going on in the department by teachers.
