Computer Science and IT industry have emerged as very fast growing fields of knowledge. Numerous other related branches like communication, Electronics mechanics etc. have acquired a new getup linking up with computers and software thereby developing an entirely new branch of engineering, reengineering and reverse engineering as “Software Engineering”. The computer centre has therefore been set up as a part of Physics Department with the idea to conduct various courses for students of various skill levels; to train and teach them, to help them upgrade their skill and walk out as IT professionals of different skill and levels. To fulfill this objective the computer centre under Department of Physics had started PGDCS (since 1987) and B. Sc. (since 1996), but due to limited availability of faculty and facilities a smooth running of the course faces hurdles. The present intake of students at B.Sc. Level is 30. We have also framed Diploma courses. Advanced Diploma courses and Post graduate Degree Courses (Modular Course) at the computer centre; but the computer centre lacks in terms of machines, furnitures, technical staff and teaching staff. It is almost impossible to provide good guidance and proper assistance to the students. Last year in 2001, the department has been granted independent status as the Department of Computer Science. Only one lecturer is working in the Department of Computer Science against the post sanctioned by the State Government.

With the emerging trends in IT industry and the increasing possibilities of career in computer science, it becomes very important to draw our attention towards it and take to job oriented vocational training programmes. We have proposed modular courses in information Technology and Computer Software Application. These courses being part time programmes will be very helpful for the students to carry on with their usual graduation/post-graduation and side by side gain a professional diploma certificate. These part time training programmes are framed around data communication, information technology, multimedia and software engineering. To facilitate the infrastructure accordingly, the latest technology machines and software are essentially required.
