Keeping in view of the increasing importance
of Biotechnology, D.D.U. Gorakhpur University initiated M.Sc. Biotechnology programme
in the academic session 2000-01. The permanent teaching faculty was appointed
in December 2000 and the department occupied its own building in March 2002. The
department now has developed modern infrastructure with seven research laboratories,
two M.Sc. Laboratories, a library, and a central instrument facility. In 2003,
the Department was selected by the Department of Biotechnology, Government of
India for financial support under its Human Resource Development programme.
The department proposes to establish a Biotechnology application centre, which
will address basic problems of rapid diagnosis of infectious diseases, production
of vaccines, multiplication of endangered medicinal plants by tissue culture and
remediation of pollution of land and water by industrial effluents. The teachers
of the Department are presently cooperating with the DOEACC CENTRE Gorakhpur in
imparting the training of Bioinformatics to the students.
