To
uproot illiteracy from the Purvanchal and to upgrade it economically, the D.D.U.
Gorakhpur University had been permitted by UGC, New Delhi on December 15th 1978
under third stage of "Prasar" of higher education to setup Adult, Continuing
and Extension Education and from April 1979, the department started complete functioning.
At the first stage of the programme permission to the project of 18 degree college
affiliated to this University had been permitted by UGC, and necessary resources
and grants for the programme were received. In the beginning the aim of the department
was to conduct literacy programmes with the help of students and the teachers
of the degree colleges. From 1979 to 1983, 170 against 180 Adult education centers
were conducted under the supervision of the Adult education unit of this department.
From October 2, 1983, the responsibility of conducting 1130, the greatest number
of Adult education centre of the country, was given to this unit by UGC, New Delhi
for the eradication of illiteracy, the 10th formula of 20 formula programme. On
the ground of latest directive policy of the commission in 1982, continuative
education programme along with Adult education was started by the department.
According to the directives of the commission from 1984-1985 to expand the programmes
of Jan Sankhya Siksha, through Jan Sankhya clubs to the youths of the university
and colleges and through them the community is made aware of the problem of Form
of Family, Quality of Life, Sex-Equality, Breeding, Health and AIDS effect of
population increase on society and the Nation, through awakening programmes.
The UGC added the field outreach program activities along with Adult, Continuing
and Extension Education programmes. Under it, literacy, post-literacy, Anuverti
Shikha, science for common people, environmental education, Vividh Sakhsarta,
and handing over the technology etc. programmes are also conducted here. Its expenses
are borne by the UGC. At present this department is functioning as a separate
department under Faculty of Education. The whole expenses incurred on the staff
and the programmes from 1979-80 to 31st March 1997, was borne by UGC. Since April
1st, 1997, the State Government has been meeting the expenses incurred on teachers
and non-teaching staff of the department.
